Norway has been a member of the WHO since its creation in 1948, and actively supports its policies and activites.
The World Health Organisation was established 7 April 1948 as the specialised health organisation under the UN umbrella. Norway has been a WHO member since its founding, and Norway has had prominent representatives in central WHO secretariat positions since its establishment. The latest was former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, who was Director-General from 1998 to 2003.
Today, Norway is the third largest contributor of voluntary financial additional contributions to the WHO, the USA and the United Kingdom being No. 1 and 2. The Norwegian contributions to the WHO are mainly financed through the budgets of the Minister of International Development.
