Parental benefit is intended to ensure that the parents have an income during parental leave in connection with a birth or adoption. The right to parental benefit is accrued by the parents working.
The parents are entitled to receive parental benefit for a specific number of weeks. Parental benefit is normally paid for a continuous period from the birth until the child is around one year old. Parental benefit may, on certain conditions, be postponed or taken as graded parental benefit but it must be taken in full by the child's third birthday.
Parents must apply for parental benefit. The scheme is managed by the Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV).
