Norway’s relations with Europe
It is in Norway’s national interest to cooperate closely with the EU and to participate actively in the ongoing political processes in Europe. In order to successfully influence important decisions, Norway must be more clear and assertive, and more active in the early stages of debate on issues of European policy.
The European Economic Area
The Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) is the cornerstone of relations between Norway and the EU. It brings together the 27 EU member states and the three EEA Efta states Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein in the internal market governed by the same basic rules.
Cooperation on Schengen and justice and home affairs
Norway participates in key aspects of EU cooperation in the area of justice and home affairs, of which the Schengen cooperation is the most important. As a Schengen member state, we are part of an internal free-travel area with a common external border.
Cooperation on foreign and security policy
Norway and the EU cooperate closely in the area of foreign policy. Working together increases our ability to promote shared values and interests effectively.
