Offshore wind - time line

In June 2020, the Solberg government opened two offshore areas for renewable energy production; Utsira Nord and Sørlige Nordsjø II in June 2021, the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy undertook a public consultation allowing for comment on the Offshore Energy Act and the Offshore Energy Regulations. The consultation also included a draft of the offshore energy guidance note. The Ministry is currently assessing the consultation comments.

  • 2020

    • Norway opens offshore areas for wind power (Friday, 12 June 2020)

      The offshore areas Utsira Nord and Sørlige Nordsjø II were opened for wind power production.

  • 2021

    • Award of acreage and opening of new areas for offshore wind in Norway (Friday, 11 June 2021)

      The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy put out several proposals for public consultation regarding development of offshore wind in Norway. The consultation was held in conjunction with the White Paper ‘Putting Energy to Work’.

  • 2022

    • Phase one of wind power production in the area of Sørlige Nordsjø II and model for allocating sea bed based on auctions (Saturday, 12 February 2022)

      The Government announced plans to implement phase one of wind power production in the Southern North Sea II area. The electricity produced from these wind farms will be transmitted via subsea cable to the Norwegian mainland. The goal is to establish a model for allocating sea areas based on auctions.

    • Planning of the offshore grid and criterias for Utsira Nord (Tuesday, 19 April 2022)

      The government has decided to give Statnett the responsibility for the overall planning of the offshore grid. The government will use qualitative criterias in the allocation round of Utsira Nord.

    • Ambitious offshore wind initiative (Wednesday, 11 May 2022)

      Today, the Government is presenting a major initiative to promote offshore wind power. The aim is to use offshore wind power to generate new electricity on a par with the total amount of electricity currently produced in Norway. The initiative will enhance access to electricity for individuals and businesses across the entire country.
