More can make use of the Rent Disputes Tribunal

From 2012, the Bergen and Trondheim offices of the Rent Disputes Tribunal will offer their services to all those who live in the counties of Hordaland and Trøndelag. This is proposed by the Government in connection with the National Budget for 2012.

The Rent Disputes Tribunal (HTU) is a body that has been set up to mediate and take decisions in all types of disputes relating to renting residential property.

"I am pleased that even more landlords and tenants will be able to benefit from the Rent DisputesTribunal. This is a useful tool to have when parties cannot agree on rents, termination of contracts or release of deposits, for example. This is a good, fast and inexpensive alternative to court proceedings," says Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Liv Signe Navarsete.

Up to now, this scheme has been available to residents of Oslo, Akershus, Bergen and Trondheim. Now the Government wishes everyone in Hordaland and Trøndelag to be able to benefit from the scheme and proposes a total of NOK 21.4 million for HTU in 2012.

"HTU is an inexpensive, low-threshold initiative. There has been great interest from areas outside the city limits of Bergen and Trondheim. It is therefore important that we can now extend the scope of the Rent Disputes Tribunal to include the whole of Hordaland and Trøndelag. Such an extension is also in line with the recommendations of the Housing Committee, which presented its official report earlier this autumn," says Navarsete.
