Norwegian Public Roads Administration

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is an administrative agency consisting of the Directorate of Public Roads and six divisions, subordinated the Ministry of Transport.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) is responsible for the national road network as well as for road users and vehicles. The agency’s principle tasks are developing and creating conditions for an effective, environmentally friendly, future-oriented and safe road transport system.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is an administrative agency consisting of the Directorate of Public Roads and six divisions, subordinated the Ministry of Transport.

The agency has a sectoral responsibility to follow up national tasks for the entire road transport system. It serves society through three roles:

  • as a contracting client
  • as an authoritative body
  • as an expert agency

The agency is responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the national network, vehicle inspection and requirements, driver training and licensing and are also authorized to grant subsidies for ferry operations.  Furthermore, the agency has a sectoral responsibility for road traffic safety, climate and environmental issues and urban transport mobility.

The company Nye Veier AS is planning, building, operating and maintaining some parts of the main roads in Norway. The company emphasises to build roads that reduce travel time, connect living- and labour market regions and ensure fewer killed and severely injured in traffic.
