The Ministry has nine departements, in addition to the Press Office.

Department of Administration
The Department of Administration shall contribute to ensuring that the Ministry of Justice and Public Security operates in line with key objectives and guidelines for the central government administration.

Department of Crime Prevention
The Department of Crime Prevention (AKF) plays a key role in the development of criminal policy, with responsibility for developing knowledge about crime trends and the challenges they pose for the criminal justice chain and the sector in general.

Migration Department
The Migration Department (INN) has overall responsibility for coordinating and implementing the state's policies on immigration, asylum seekers and refugees.

Press Office
The Press Office works as the information adviser for the political and administrative management, as well as for the nine departments.

Legislation Department
The Ministry of Justice and Public Security's Legislation Department is a legal expertise body serving the Government and the central government administration.

Polar Affairs Department
The Polar Affairs Department is responsible for coordinating matters relating to the polar regions in the central government administration – the Arctic, including Svalbard and Jan Mayen, and the Antarctic.

Police Department
The Police Department is responsible for drawing up the main lines for the development and management of the police force in both the short and long term.

Department of Public Security
The Department of Public Security (SAM) is responsible for public security and preparedness, crisis management and security management in the justice sector.

Civil Affairs Department
The Civil Affairs Department is responsible for a broad range of specialist areas that are important for safeguarding the rights of individual citizens and facilitating sound judicial procedures.
