The Norwegian Government is expanding the temporary collective protection scheme for displaced people from Ukraine. Ukrainian citizens who were in Norway on 24 February 2022 can also receive collective protection now.
On 11 March, The Norwegian Government introduced a temporary collective protection scheme for displaced people from Ukraine. Upon introduction, the scheme covered Ukrainian citizens who fled Ukraine on 24 February or later, as well as certain third-country citizens and stateless people.
‘Students and seasonal workers can now receive temporary collective protection in Norway. Simplified case processing can be applied to their asylum applications, as for other Ukrainians. They will also be able to continue their studies and work without waiting for more time-consuming processing of their applications,’ says Minister of Justice and Public Security Emilie Enger Mehl.
At the outbreak of the war, several Ukrainians who were already in Norway had residence permits that were about to expire. Out of consideration of efficient case processing, equal treatment, and allowing people to continue working and study, the Norwegian Government has today resolved to include more people in the scheme. The change means that people who were in Norway before 24 February can be given temporary collective protection. This is contingent on the previous permit having expired or it expiring within two months of submission of their application for protection.
