Amidst the ongoing horrors in Gaza, the situation in the occupied West Bank is extremely dangerous. The massive Israeli military operations in and around Jenin, Tulkarem and Tubas, escalate an already tense situation, with unforeseen consequences for the stability in the region.
Israel’s use of force must comply with relevant international law, including international human rights and standards applicable to law enforcement. Access to medical care for those injured is critical.
Humanitarian workers must be able to reach everyone in need. Settler violence is further endangering Palestinian lives and livelihoods. Armed, extremist settlers continue to terrorize and harm Palestinians, with almost total impunity. Such attacks must immediately come to an end. Israel, as the occupying power, is required by international law to protect the Palestinian civilian population.
Norway is aligned with EU sanctions against extremist settlers in the West Bank and will continue to consider measures as appropriate.
Stability in the occupied West Bank is desperately needed, to lower the tension. Ending the illegal occupation in accordance with the recent International Court of Justice advisory opinion is crucial. Reaching a sustainable two-state solution is a pre-requisite for peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis.
