‘Norway will provide NOK 9.5 million in funding to the World Food Programme (WFP) for the transport, processing and distribution of 25,000 tons of grain from Ukraine to Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Anniken Huitfeldt.

The grain is part of a 50,000 metric ton donation by Ukraine for use in UN efforts to combat hunger in the Horn of Africa, particularly in Ethiopia and Somalia. In Ethiopia alone, the grain will help to provide food for some 3.5 million people.

‘I am pleased that Norway and a number of other countries are joining forces to facilitate this sorely-needed but very challenging grain transport operation. The delivery of this grain will help to combat hunger in Ethiopia and Somalia,’ said Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt.

The war in Ukraine has led to reduced access to food in many places around the world. Norway, Finland, France and Germany are among the countries working together to facilitate the transport of grain delivery from Ukraine.

‘Reliable access to food is a basic necessity. The world is contending with a growing number of crises and it is vital that we strengthen food security. Ensuring that food delivery can be sustained in times of crisis can reduce subsequent humanitarian needs,’ said Minister of International Development Anne Beathe Tvinnereim.

The funding is being provided as part of Norway’s ongoing efforts to combat hunger in the Horn of Africa, and to address the increase in food insecurity caused by the war in Ukraine. Norway’s support will help to ensure the shipment of grain can be carried out swiftly.
