Important: Pets from Ukraine must be registered with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority

– It is important for us to maintain an overview of which animals enter Norway. This is a crucial part of our work to reduce the risk of fatal diseases, such as rabies, spreading to humans and other animals. This is why all pets must be registered with and checked by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, says Sandra Borch (Centre Party), Minister of Agriculture and Food.

– I would urge all pet owners or those providing such people with assistance to get in touch with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority as soon as they arrive in Norway, says Borch.

All Ukrainian pets must be registered with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority to allow them to be ID marked, as well as ensuring they receive a rabies vaccine and any necessary parasite treatments. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority will quarantine animals where this is necessary. The state will cover all costs for tests, ID marking, vaccination, parasite treatments and quarantine.

Home isolation

Due to the prevailing extraordinary circumstances, permission will be granted where possible for quarantine to be combined with home isolation, subject to strict terms and conditions. This scheme only applies to refugees arriving from Ukraine in Norway with their own pets.

Following the completion of quarantine, animals will ordinarily be returned to their owners. It will be difficult for some individuals to keep animals in their new accommodation, e.g. a reception centre. In those instances, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food will work together with affected ministries to evaluate alternative solutions.
